DSLR Camera and the Photo Studio

As the photo shoot for our models is approaching we have, today been in a tour around the Photo Studio gathering information about how all the equipment works and their individual purpose for making a good picture stand out professionally.

Going through the technical terms of both the camera and the lighting set up I will now explain how they function starting with the source of light which is the major role of an interesting and meaningful photo on the models as it can give many effects if the shadows and light are used properly.

First up are the SoftBoxes by Bowens. A SoftBox is mainly a material that covers up the light bulb and has an umbrella type of shape to it. The material is used to soften up the light as it passes through which is ideal for getting a clear, smooth look without having too much shadow. Especially under places like the chin as hard light gives an unappealing look.

Behind in the background is another light source called a Snoot which is always placed behind the subject, A Snoot is a tube that fits over a studio light or portable flash which gives out a beam of light usually pointing behind the model. It is very effective especially in situations where the colour of the background blends in with clothes or hair.

Alternative Masthead Design

I have changed up my initial design for my Masthead as I thought it looked too rough and too plain as it didn't look too appealing. However I have given it more of a smooth curve around the edges and given it a slight 3D kind of effect with the dark and light red on the life line to bring it more interest and bold it out in front of a black background.

Initial masthead design

After doing the testing on Adobe Illustrator I have used one of my ideas from my proposal to create a masthead to be used on my magazine. I used a simple bold font for the first concept, then I got a heartbeat monitor image and cropped out the line to replace the V on the title to give it an interesting look and also show the meaning of the word itself.

Experimenting with Adobe Illustrator

In today's lesson we had a technician come in and explain how Adobe Illustrator worked by giving us a small induction to the application, going through all the tools and features that were useful to us for making our initial ideas for our magazine masthead.
During the tutorial I came up with this, by following all the steps I have gathered some knowledge on using the app itself and went on to create my first design idea after the testing.

College Magazine - Evaluation

Evaluation

First being introduced to the assignment of creating our own Magazines for LSC, I needed to gather some pictures to present just like the other magazines we’ve been analysing. Gathering information and learning from them I wanted to create a professional kind of design and look for my magazine so it can stand out like the rest of what we saw.
After collecting my photographs I used both Photoshop and InDesign to create a front cover and contents page as well as the beginning of my Double Page Spread. From the knowledge I acquired through analysing and comparing I was able to distinguish what a bad and good magazine should look like; such as the right fonts, colour schemes and terminology used for example masthead, cover lines and puff used throughout most magazines.
Furthermore, to accomplish my goal of producing a good cover or even a professional one I used the basics and put them into detail; such as ordering the Puff, Masthead and even the barcode to make a good layout so everything is presented neatly, not to forget the 3 colour scheme ‘rule’ which I used. The reason I put this to mind is because the whole point of producing a magazine is to make it presentable and not too flashy (depending on the genre) however this was a college magazine therefore I went with a more simple design with some features to get some attention to it.

Self evaluation

There were a few problems for sure, however there are many aspects that I liked about my magazine cover and contents page. Both were of acceptable quality, even though it looked simple it still could serve its purpose as a college magazine because all the information and necessary features are included in the magazine such as a barcode, masthead etc.. And images to link with the main text and headlines.

Peer evaluation

Similar to my self-evaluation, the viewers of my college magazine thought it was simple which made it look professional, classy and easy to get all the information in because the layout and fonts were clear and easy to understand as it’s not jumbled up together in one place.

Points for improvement

• Add more detail to the cover, some more pictures or even have a big one fill the page like I did in the contents page. And produce a more appealing and colourful design for my cover.
• Adapt the context page with the front cover, the style was a bit different and it only had 2 of the colours from the colour scheme.
